Curriculum Focus

Our Montessori elementary curriculum is thoughtfully designed to support children during the second plane of development, a time when curiosity deepens, and understanding begins to take shape. Through a rich, integrated course of study that includes math, language, writing, science, history, geography, and cultural studies, learning invites your child to reason, imagine, collaborate, and discover the beautiful interconnectedness of human life and the world around them.

Daily Routine

Each week offers generous, uninterrupted work-cycles that give students the time and space to focus deeply, follow their interests, work independently or alongside peers, and complete meaningful assignments they feel proud of. This gentle rhythm nurtures progress, responsibility, and confidence while honoring each child's natural motivation and love of learning.

Classroom Experience

Our Montessori elementary classrooms are calm, welcoming spaces where children move freely, choose work with intention, and collaborate naturally with classmates. The environment reflects your child's work and thinking, creating a sense of belonging where independence, creativity, and concentration are truly valued and carefully nurtured.

About Our Montessori Elementary School Program

The elementary years are a beautiful turning point in your child's learning journey. During this stage, children move beyond simply absorbing information and begin to think more deeply, asking meaningful questions about how the world works and why things happen the way they do. Dr. Maria Montessori described this as a time when children seek understanding, fairness, and truth, and when learning becomes deeply connected to imagination, reasoning, and moral awareness. In our elementary program, everything is thoughtfully designed to support your child during this important stage of development. Across every subject in our elementary program, your child is invited to think deeply, imagine boldly, and act with purpose. We believe that learning is not about memorizing facts, but about building understanding, confidence, and a lasting sense of belonging in the world.

How Learning Comes to Life Across the Elementary Curriculum (Ages 6-12; Grade 1-5)

During the elementary years, your child begins organizing everything they gathered during early childhood, much like discovering they now have a growing library of ideas they can sort, question, and connect. In our elementary program, this exciting stage is supported across every subject, where reasoning, imagination, responsibility, and moral awareness are woven gently into daily learning. Your child is seen, respected, and encouraged to think deeply about the world around them.

Practical Life Skills: Responsibility, Independence, and Real-World Readiness

In our elementary program, Practical Life evolves into meaningful, real-world skills that support your child's growing independence. Your child learns how to manage time, plan work, collaborate with classmates, and take responsibility for assignments. These experiences build confidence, self-discipline, and a sense of ownership over learning, helping your child feel capable and prepared for middle school, college, and life beyond the classroom.

Mathematics: Reasoning, Logic, and Abstract Thinking

In math, your child moves from hands-on materials to abstract concepts at their own pace, discovering not only how math works, but why it works. Rather than memorizing steps, your child builds true understanding through exploration and practice. This approach strengthens problem-solving skills, confidence, and a love of learning, which support success well beyond the elementary years.

Language, Reading, and Writing: Expression and Meaning

Language becomes a powerful way for your child to express ideas, organize thoughts, and share understanding. In our elementary program, reading and writing are woven throughout the day as your child researches interests, writes with purpose, and engages in thoughtful discussion. These experiences help your child develop strong communication skills and confidence in their voice.

Science and Geography: Inquiry, Exploration, and Understanding the World

Science and geography invite your child to explore the natural world with curiosity and wonder. Through experiments, observation, and research, your child investigates ecosystems, landforms, and the relationships between people and the environment. Learning becomes an exciting journey of discovery that nurtures critical thinking and a growing global awareness.

History and Cultural Studies: Imagination, Ethics, and the Human Story

History and cultural studies speak deeply to your child's imagination and developing sense of right and wrong. Through stories, timelines, and projects, your child explores civilizations, cultures, and human progress. These lessons naturally encourage reflection on fairness, justice, and responsibility, helping your child understand their place within a shared human story.

Cosmic Education: Seeing the Interconnectedness of All Things

Cosmic Education is at the heart of our elementary program. Through the Five Great Lessons, your child is introduced to the story of the universe, the formation of Earth, the development of life, the journey of humanity, and the origins of language and numbers. These powerful stories spark wonder and provide a framework for all learning, helping your child see how math, science, history, geography, and language are beautifully connected. Cosmic Education encourages your child to ask big questions, explore meaningful ideas, and understand their responsibility within the wider world.

Community, Collaboration, and Moral Development

In our mixed-age elementary classrooms, your child learns alongside peers with different strengths, interests, and abilities. This supportive environment encourages collaboration, leadership, empathy, and respect. As your child grows, especially in upper elementary, they become more aware of social and global issues. They are gently guided to take thoughtful action through community projects, environmental care, and service learning.

Truly we have been so fortunate with SLMS. They have done so great with all they have taught our kids, the love, guidance and patience. They have become part of our family! Leadership at SLMS between director, assistant director and curriculum coordinator, are all great. They listen and have support their staff. All of the teachers we have had, have been wonderful.

I love how responsive and attentive the school is to my child's needs. Additionally, when I have questions, and request feedback, responses are received promptly. Pictures throughout the day allow me to see my child and observe him at work and play. Security is also key, and I appreciate that my child's safety is a top priority for the school.
